As a company Marchant supports schools through the provision of practical lesson plans and supporting information, designed to help children to better understand the importance of conservation – and of protecting and increasing biodiversity – in and around their own homes.
We have developed two lesson plans to help teach environmentalism and good environmental practices in schools. They cover national curriculum areas in geography, citizenship, environment, ICT and maths (block C – handling data). You can download them here together with a Word Puzzle which is part of Lesson 1.
Lesson plan 1 - Assessing your school environment
This lesson plan will teach children to identify existing biodiversity and wildlife habitats in a given area. KS1 and 2 Children should learn to investigate places, to collect and record evidence to answer questions, how people affect the environment, how trees support biodiversity and to use ICT to present findings.

Lesson Plan 2 - Improving your school's natural environment
Through a series of activities, this lesson plan will teach children to investigate places, to collect and record evidence to answer questions, how people affect the environment, how trees support biodiversity, to use ICT to present findings. In addition children will become familiar with terms relating to nature and the environment.

In addition we offer free compostable bags for use in schools, to encourage awareness of the importance of recycling, sustainability and caring for the environment.
Teachers can telephone 01440 705351 or email jamesmarchant@marchant.co.uk for more information and ro request free compostable bags. In return we simply ask that (if possible) you could send us a small selection of work from the classes which used the bags, or the lesson plans, so that we can put them on our website to inspire and encourage the environmentalist in us all.
With thanks to Lois Jarrold, class teacher at Bentfield Primary School in Essex, and Clare Lake, class teacher at Southlands Lower School Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, for their assistance in producing these lesson plans.
